Conservation

However, the main human actions resulting in UME of sea lions are often the ones cannot be regulated by laws given that lack of food sources and toxic algal blooms are triggered by global warming and entanglements of sea lions are due to pollution.

All marine mammals are protected under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) which makes it illegal to “take” marine mammals without a permit. Any harassment, feeding, hunting, capture or collection and killing any marine mammal or part of a marine mammal can be taken a legal action against the U.S. MMPA.

What can we do for our Sea Lions?
-
Be a part in green movements reducing the effects of global warming and climate changes
-
Recycle plastic products, especially, plastic bags and fishing nets, which may cause entanglements and toxic ingestions in marine mammals
-
Help keep the ocean clean by stop dumping into the water
-
Support marine mammal research and conservation (visit the Marine Mammal Center website for more information http://www.marinemammalcenter.org/)
-
Once you come across a stranded marine mammal, contact the Marine Mammal Center as soon as possible: Do not touch, pour water on or feed the animals as it is both unsafe and illegal!
