Pier 39 Sea Lions

On October 1988, Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco. Shortly after this earthquake, a few CA sea lions come to Pier 39’s K-Dock. The arrival of these sea lions upset the Pier 39’s Marina Staff, who then asked The Marine Mammal Center for advice. Ultimately, it was decided that the CA Sea Lions should remain in
Pier 39’s dock.

Why Pier 39?
The number of sea lions at the dock quickly rose because of the abundant food sources from the Bay and the protection from the predators like killer whales and sharks. In November 2009, the number of sea lions at Pier 39 peaked at 1701.
